Areas of Special Interest

"I have maintained a general family practice for nearly 20 years in a number of different settings, but all of these settings gave me a different kind of experience with a different kind of clientele. I started out working in a multidisciplinary clinic that worked with a large motor vehicle accident base, which gave me years of experience working with acute and chronic pain management. I then opened my own practice right around the time I was starting my own family. Being part of a large community of new moms, this naturally led me into treating a lot of prenatal, pediatric and fertility patients – which I absolutely love. Shortly after starting my own practice, I was presented with an opportunity to join a men’s drug and alcohol withdrawal center that focused on a biopsychosocial approach to recovery. I found working with this patient population to be extremely rewarding. To see the dramatic changes happen in such short periods of time for people entering into recovery was a very rewarding experience.

With the onset of the pandemic, the center closed, and I found myself going back to my roots of health and fitness and joined a multidisciplinary clinic/rehabilitation facility where my practice focuses on sport and exercise performance enhancement. I feel like this varied experience with such different populations has taught me that everyone is at a different place on their healthcare journey and capable of different things.

I love the challenge of meeting people where they’re at, and creating a plan with them that will motivate and foster changes in the direction they would like to move."

Dr. Shelly's Mission for You

"I think what sets me apart in this profession is my desire to keep things simple. I hear about treatment plans that I, as a healthcare professional, would find overwhelming to try to implement. I try to focus on what I think most of us (in North America) are missing – balance. I have learned over the years that having a realistic plan is sometimes harder to achieve than a complicated one. It can only happen if practitioner and patient work together to create a workable and flexible outline, and continue to make changes in order to maintain ongoing progress and improvement."
