Back Pain - Assess, Diagnose, Treat

July 18, 2019

Did you know low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide? It affects 80% of the population at some point in their life and 1 in 3 people on a yearly basis. Whether pain strikes suddenly or has been around for years, many people do not know what type of non-pharmacological solutions are available to them or most appropriate for their condition.

Chiropractors in Canada are extensively trained to assess and diagnose neuromusculoskeletal conditions – i.e. pain or dysfunction arising from the muscles, joints and nerves throughout the entire body – and are known as spinal experts. By performing a thorough history and physical examination, they can determine the underlying cause of your aches and pains. Subsequently, they can create an individualized treatment plan to help reduce pain and improve function in your daily activities, work and/or hobbies.

Spinal manipulation provided by chiropractors is an effective first-line treatment for low back pain, as recommended in the recent American College of Physicians clinical practice guideline. Spinal manipulation improves joint mobility, reduces muscle tension and relieves pain. However, it is not the only “tool” that chiropractors use and is not recommended for every body. Other treatment techniques include joint mobilizations, myofascial release and acupuncture. Chiropractors strive to help you understand your pain and take control of it by providing education, reassurance and self-care recommendations, as well as prescribing therapeutic exercises to stretch “tight” muscles and strengthen “weak” muscles.

Individuals under chiropractic care tend to report significant improvements in mobility, quality of life and overall function. A pilot study in Ontario has found that chiropractors participating in Family Health Teams results in improved patient outcomes, including: significant reductions in pain, opioid and prescription pain medication use, emergency room visits, and referrals for diagnostic imaging.  Book an initial consultation, or a free 15 minute consultation to learn more now.
